Oklahoma kicker Tate Sandell makes shirt to profit off Kirk Herbstreit’s ‘short shorts’ jab

The crew of College GameDay made the trek out to Norman, Oklahoma, on Friday for the first game of the 2025-2026 College Football Playoff between Alabama and Oklahoma, and Pat McAfee had some high praise for the Sooners’ place kicker, Tate Sandell, during the program.

McAfee shouted out the 2025 Lou Groza Award winner for his superb play so far this season, and he also touched on the “short shorts” that Sandell wears during the games.

During his segment on Sandell, McAfee actually brought out a custom t-shirt that Sandell has been making over the past several weeks, a shirt that reads “Short shorts, long kicks,” and “Flag that, Herbstreit.”

The shirt is a playful jab at the comments Kirk Herbstreit made about Sandell’s pants during the Sooners’ 33-27 win over the Tennessee Volunteers back on October 1st. Herbstreit was on the call for that game and said that dressing the way Sandell does on the football field should “be a penalty.”

All jokes aside, it’s pretty clear that Sandell’s preference when it comes to the length of his football pants isn’t hurting his performance on the field, as he’s been the best kicker in the nation this season. The Sooners will be looking for him to continue this trend against the Crimson Tide as they attempt to win their first CFP game in program history.
