Oklahoma continues to rebuild its quarterback room through the transfer portal.
The newest Sooner quarterback comes from the former Southern Conference Player of the Year in the FCS ranks in 2023. Western Carolina transfer Cole Gonzales is headed to Oklahoma.
Cole Gonzales is the son of Florida wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales. Cole played for Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala, Florida, about 40 miles south of UF campus in Gainesville.
The younger Gonzales heads to the FBS after 3 seasons at Western Carolina. He has 1 redshirt available and 1 full season of eligibility.
Per his Western Carolina bio, Gonzales has played in 27 games over 3 seasons. He was SoCon Player of the Year in 2023, completing 66% of his passes 2,803 yards with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 28-8 over 11 games.
Gonzales played in just 8 games this past season. While his TD-INT ratio was 12-7, his average yards per game increased from 254.8 to 317.9.
For his career, Gonzales has a completion percentage of 64% with 6,682 passing yards, 51 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. He joins an OU quarterback room that recently added top transfer QB John Mateer from the portal and is set to return Michael Hawkins. The Sooners also signed 3-star prospect Jett Niu in their 2025 recruiting class.
