Oklahoma State fired long-time head football coach Mike Gundy on Tuesday after the Cowboys began the 2025 season with a 1-2 record. In the aftermath of that decision, Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg released a statement.
Weiberg thanked Gundy for his contributions as Oklahoma State looks ahead to find his successor. Offensive coordinator Doug Meacham will serve as Oklahoma State’s interim head coach.
Cowboy Football reached an unprecedented level of success and national prominence under Coach Gundy’s leadership,” Weiberg said. “I believe I speak for OSU fans everywhere when I say that we are grateful for all he did to raise the standard and show us all what is possible for Oklahoma State football.
Gundy was a member of the Oklahoma State program for over 30 combined years as a player and coach. Gundy is the winningest coach in program history with 170 victories.
Oklahoma State president Jim Hess expressed that the tough choice to let Gundy go is with the future of Oklahoma State football in mind.
“This is a decision about what’s best for our football program, our student-athletes and Oklahoma State University and it reflects our unwavering commitment to championship-level football and competing for national success,” Hess said.
