Ole Miss quarterback battle: ESPN analyst makes prediction on Week 1 starter
Ole Miss is preparing to have a very competitive quarterback battle during fall camp.
The competition will feature a pair of newcomers in Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard as well as incumbent starter Jaxson Dart.
Last season, Dart completed 62.4% of his passes while throwing for 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He was impressive at times, but Ole Miss still opted to bring in multiple competitors for the starting job this offseason.
ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg previewed some of the country’s most important quarterback competitions in a story published on Friday. Rittenberg predicted that Sanders will ultimately win the Rebels’ starting job.
Here’s his analysis:
Prediction: Sanders. At full strength, Sanders gives Kiffin a productive, proven player who can attack defenses in multiple ways. Few would be shocked if Dart retains the job, but Ole Miss clearly wants options and Sanders provides the best one with 9,553 career passing yards and 67 touchdowns.
Sanders was a 4-year starter at Oklahoma State before entering the transfer portal. He battled injuries in 2022, but has thrown for 9,553 yards in his prolific collegiate career so far.
Ole Miss will open the 2023 season against Mercer on Sept. 2.
