Oops: ESPN announcers spend 30 seconds awkwardly debating obvious no-catch

In college football, you have to get at least 1 foot down in bounds for a catch to be legitimate.

Of course, the most important thing is that you actually, you know, catch the ball. That’s what the ESPN announcers failed to recognize during Friday night’s Tulsa-South Florida game.

As you can see below, the broadcasters discuss whether or not the Tulsa receiver got a foot down, debating it for a good 30 seconds despite the fact that the receiver didn’t even come close to catching the ball:

Even upon seeing a couple of replays, the announcers were clearly so focused on the receiver’s feet that they didn’t notice the ball bouncing around on the ground. With the virtual setup many broadcasters are using this year amid the pandemic, it’s possible that had something to do with this mishap.

There’s a lot of debate these days about what is a catch and what isn’t, but that play was very definitively not a catch.
