Oregon Duck mascot decapitated ahead of season-opener vs. Montana State

Before the opening game of the 2025 season, Oregon experienced the worst of bad omens.

As the Oregon Duck took the field, he lost his head.

The BTN broadcast just barely flipped over to the beloved mascot flipping in the endzone as his head tumbled away from him. While taking the field, the mascot tripped and fell and had to sprint back underneath the stands to keep from being seen.

Oregon’s mascot lost his head last season, too, to be fair. In a game against Purdue, The Duck was running onto the field with the team in West Lafayette, Indiana, when he collided with a player and was knocked over.

The Ducks went on to win that game 35-0.

Oregon also capped that season a perfect 12-0, won the Big Ten championship, and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff.

Still, the incident did prove to be a bad omen. Oregon was throttled in its first game of the CFP by the eventual champs, Ohio State.

It might not be right away, but the college football gods might make the Ducks pay once again for their mascot mishap.

In fact, it certainly won’t be right away. Oregon scored on each of its first 4 possessions against Montana State. The Ducks also forced 3-and-outs on 3 of the Bobcats’ first 4 possessions to begin Saturday’s game.
