John Mateer has helped catapult this year’s Oklahoma team into the national college football conversation. They are undefeated and have a 3-0 record, highlighted by a massive home win against Michigan. If Oklahoma wins this week, Mateer will strengthen his case as one of the Heisman Trophy favorites.

One of the most prominent sports media personalities, ESPN college football analyst and overall hype man Pat McAfee, made it a point to gush about what Mateer and this Oklahoma offense have looked like so far this season on his Friday show.

“This might be the first time in a long time that we see Brent Venables with an offense that can match how great his defense is,” McAfee said. “What the Oklahoma offense looks like with Mateer after coming over with his offensive coordinator has resulted in an explosive and reliable offense. I like this Oklahoma team a lot.”

Through three games, Mateer has thrown for 944 passing yards and five touchdowns, with only three interceptions on a 67.6% completion percentage. Then, on the ground, he has 161 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 33 carries.

Everything on this offense flows through Mateer. Tory Blaylock is the leading rusher with 166 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. The receiving corps has been solid, too, with four receivers having over 100 yards receiving.

Oklahoma will face Auburn at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
