Another former Auburn Tiger will be taking the first snap for the New England Patriots if Cam Newton is unable to play in this week’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Second-year pro Jarrett Stidham will be the starter if Newton can’t go. Newton tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Patriots’ last matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, a game that was pushed to Monday. Veteran Brian Hoyer started that game, but Stidham entered after Hoyer struggled and went 5-of-13 for 60 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the loss.

As of now, the Patriots’ game against the Broncos has been moved to Monday again, although more positive tests could put the game in jeopardy.

Although both are former Auburn players, Newton is a former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick, as well as a former NFL MVP. Stidham was a fourth-round draft choice by the Patriots in 2019 and is looking to make his mark in the league.

He may get his opportunity on Monday.
