After Nick Saban picked up another signature win on Saturday, Paul Finebaum weighed in on the Saban vs. Kirby Smart conversation.
Obviously Smart has emerged as one of the best coaches of the last decade, but Finebaum believes Saban is still in a league of his own when it comes to current coaches in the NCAA. To put it in perspective, Finebaum compared Saban to some of the greatest golfers of all time.
“He is like every great athlete we’ve ever covered. I think more golf than any other sport,” Finebaum said on The Matt Barrie Show on Sunday. “If you study (Jack) Nicklaus, if you study Tiger Woods, they were not competing with Phil Mickelson and Arnold Palmer, they were competing with themselves. That’s what Nick Saban does. He’s not thinking about Kirby Smart like we think he is.”
Saban has managed to bounce back from an early loss to Texas and turn his team into a Playoff caliber team. With the win over LSU on Saturday, Saban got his team even closer to making a case for a CFP appearance.
With a handful of games that should be wins left on the schedule, it seems like Alabama will finish at the top of the SEC West and make the trip to Atlanta in December.
