Paul Finebaum, Matt Barrie outline where Texas A&M falls in new SEC power structure
Paul Finebaum and Matt Barrie broke down the SEC power structure following Jimbo Fisher’s firing at Texas A&M on the Matt Barrie Show on Sunday.
Barrie believes with Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC next season, Texas A&M sits pretty low in the SEC power structure.
“Georgia 1, Alabama 2, Texas 3, Oklahoma 4, LSU in there at the top 5 — that’s 5,” Barrie said. “Florida’s dormant, Tennessee 7. So now where’s A&M, 8?”
Finebaum believes that Fisher’s firing could lead to a domino effect in the SEC. Fisher had more success than a lot of other coaches this season, and Finebaum questioned what his firing could mean for some struggling programs.
“If you’re at some of these other schools in the SEC and you’re trying to compete,” Finebaum said. “And you see a guy that just won by 40 points against your school and he got fired on a Sunday, what does that say about your guy if you’re at Arkansas, if you’re at Florida, a lot of places where I think there’s a lot of soul searching now.”
But Finebaum offered hope for Aggies fans. He believes Texas A&M can still be elite, he just thinks Fisher went about it the wrong way.
“I still believe it can be elite, but it has to have the right coach,” Finebaum said. “And Jimbo Fisher was just going to the most expensive store on 5th avenue and buying the most expensive clothes and thinking that’s going to get you in the after party at a Taylor Swift concert. It just doesn’t work.”
