First impressions are everything.
Alabama’s loss to Florida State in Week 1 shaped public discourse in a lot of ways, but a lot of folks immediately drew conclusions about Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, too. The Tide quarterback didn’t have his best game, but Alabama’s loss emphasized his inaccuracy in what was otherwise a fine outing. Simpson didn’t turn the ball over and threw for 254 yards and a pair of touchdowns against a Florida State team that is currently in the top 25.
Since then, Simpson has been excellent. He’s thrown 11 touchdowns passes and had just one pass intercepted while leading the Tide to wins over Georgia and Vanderbilt. Now, he’ll try to snag another victory over No. 14 Mizzou.
SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum jumped at the opportunity to go to bat for Simpson Saturday morning, insisting that without considering his performance against Florida State 7 weeks ago, Simpson has been the best quarterback in the country.
Check it out:
Simpson will have a further chance to prove himself to the country on Saturday against a strong Mizzou defense, in Columbia. The Tigers have the 3rd best pass defense in the SEC by yards allowed, though it’s important to note that the best quarterbacks they’ve played are Kansas’s Jalon Daniels and South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers.
We’ll find out soon enough if Simpson deserves to be counted among the best of the best.
