Pete Alonso, the New York Mets slugger and former Florida star, was involved in a serious vehicle crash on Sunday, and images have revealed a gnarly mess and illustrate how serious it was for Alonso to survive.
TMZ reported that video his wife shared revealed that his truck came to a halt on its side after it rolled over several times in a wild wreck in Tampa, Fla. over the weekend.
“A distracted driver ran a red light going at an extremely fast rate and hit directly into Pete’s truck,” Haley said in the caption on the videos. “I was in my car following behind him and saw the whole thing happen in front of me. Once the car struck the side of his truck, it flipped 3 times and slid into where you see it in these videos.”
Alonso explained to reporters at spring training that it’s really special to be there.
“This is a really special spring training because yesterday was a really close experience to death. My car flipped over probably about 3 times and a guy ran a red light, T-boned me, and to me I’m just really thankful to be alive. I’m really thankful that I’m healthy. I’m very thankful to be here,” he said, via the Associated Press. “It’s just anything can happen at any given moment, and I’m just super, super blessed to be here. Hit, took some groundballs, threw, feel normal, feel fine. I’m going to be ready to go for full activity tomorrow. It’s just taking today to do some personal work, like some one-on-one drills. But today I just feel really blessed to be here, not just alive but health as well.”
