Pete Golding and the Ole Miss defense got off to a good start against Alabama by holding the Crimson Tide to an early field goal. Then the Rebels intercepted Jalen Milroe on a pass to the end zone.

Golding and Ole Miss led Alabama 7-6 at halftime.

While Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin shared much of the spotlight this week, Golding’s return to Tuscaloosa as Ole Miss’ defensive coordinator was certainly an interesting subplot.

Golding was with Nick Saban at Alabama since 2018, and for the previous 4 seasons as defensive coordinator.

Golding came to Tuscaloosa after he coached defensive backs and handling the defensive coordinator duties at the University of Texas-San Antonio in 2016 and 2017.

Golding told reporters that the move to Ole Miss was because he wanted to be a better husband and father, and discussed the family ties he has to Mississippi. As a former Division II player and coach, Golding said his goal was always to coach in the SEC.

Golding said his wife was born and raised and Mississippi and went to Ole Miss, and his mother was born and raised in Mississippi, and this is his 3rd stint in Mississippi.

Coming into this game, Ole Miss’ defense was 11th in the SEC in total defense, as it gave up 350 yards per game.
