An emotional Philip Rivers fought back tears as he delivered an inspirational message following the Colts’ 18-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
The 44-year-old quarterback made his NFL return after nearly five years away from the game. With under a minute left, Rivers had the Colts positioned to pick up the win in his return. Unfortunately for Rivers, Sam Darnold and the Seahawks responded with a game-winning field goal drive of their own.
In the postgame, Rivers had time to reflect on what this return meant for him and those around him.
“Hopefully, my sons and those ballplayers that I’m in charge of at the school, they’ll say, like, “Crap, coach wasn’t scared,'” Rivers said. “The guaranteed safe bet is to go home or to not go for it, and the other one is, ‘Shoot, let’s see what happens.'”
Rivers finished the game completing 18 of his 27 passing attempts for 120 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. It’s unclear if Rivers will continue to be the starter going forward.
Next week, the Colts host the 49ers on Monday Night Football.
