A.J. Schlatter, a Portland State linebacker, died on Sunday due to complications resulting from tonsil surgery.
His father, James, revealed that doctors believe the death came about because of a bloodclot that formed after the surgery. Schlatter’s immediate family and emergency personnel tried to resuscitate him, but were unfortunately not able to do so.
James had this to say in a sorrowful Facebook post:

Schlatter, a redshirt freshman, started 10 games for the Vikings this past season, making 62 tackles.
He had an incredible performance against Eastern Washington on Nov. 21 that led to him being named Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week. He had 12 tackles, 2 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble in the win.
Schlatter was a walk-on before earning a full scholarship with the Vikings.
