Dak Prescott recently completed one of the greatest individual seasons in Mississippi State football history, earning himself a trip to Disney World for the 2014 Home Depot College Football Awards show.
He was a finalist for the Maxwell Award, given to the nation’s best player, and the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the nation’s best quarterback. Unfortunately, he’ll return to Starkville empty-handed.
Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota took home both awards Thursday night.
Prescott finished the regular season with 2,996 yards through the air and 939 yards on the ground in addition to accounting for 38 total touchdowns. He set 10 school records during the year and led Mississippi State to its first 10-win regular season in more than 70 years.
Mariota threw for 3,783 passing yards, 669 rushing yards, 55 total touchdowns and just two interceptions. He’s expected to win this year’s Heisman Trophy when it’s presented on Saturday.
Prescott was named the first-team All-SEC quarterback on the Associated Press and Coaches’ all-conference teams. He’s also a finalist for the Manning Award, given to the nation’s best quarterback following the conclusion of bowl season next month.
Prescott and Mississippi State will compete in their first Orange Bowl since 1941 on Dec. 31 when they take on ACC runner-up Georgia Tech.
