Rapid Reaction: Texas cruises past San Jose State as Arch Manning scores 5 TDs

Arch Manning found a bit of comfort on Saturday as No. 8 Texas (1-1) rolled San Jose State (0-2).
Manning scored 5 touchdowns in the game, 4 through the air and 1 on the ground. The Longhorns forced 3 first-half turnovers and used that momentum to open up a huge lead. They then coasted in the second half to their first victory of the new campaign.
One week removed from a disappointing performance in Columbus, Manning and the Texas offense got off to a slow start at home. They punted on each of their first 2 drives while the collective anxiety in Austin rose.
Then Manning hit a wide-open Parker Livingstone for an 83-yard touchdown and the wheels came off the Spartans’ wagon.
San Jose State threw an interception on the first play of the ensuing drive. Manning hit Livingstone for a 3-yard score to go up 14-0. Then San Jose State fumbled on the second play of the following drive. Manning hit tight end Jack Endries up the seam for a 36-yard score on the next play. On the third play of San Jose State’s ensuing possession, the Spartans fumbled again. Texas recovered, returned the ball to the SJSU 1-yard-line, and scored 2 plays later to go up 28-0.
In the second half, Texas held San Jose State to just 95 yards of total offense. The Longhorns did, however, see star edge Colin Simmons exit the game late. Safety Michael Taaffe also appeared to pick up a knock. Their statuses will likely be updated by coach Steve Sarkisian in the coming days.
Texas returns to action next Saturday when it hosts UTEP at 4:15 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
