Rapid Reaction: Vintage Alabama shows up as Crimson Tide rout Maryland to advance to Sweet 16

The Alabama Crimson Tide had been in a slump from 3-point range. In their Round 1 win over Iona, the Tide went only 5-for-16 from beyond the arc.

Of course, they don’t need the 3 ball to fall to win games. They do that with their defense and smart offensive sets. But, on Monday night in Round 2 against 10-seed Maryland, the Tide were back to their usual dominant selves in a 96-77 rout of the Terrapins.

And, the 3s were falling again. The Tide went 16-for-33 from beyond the arc against the Terps, who never gave the Tide a real threat. That continues the rough round for the Big Ten.

Maryland, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Rutgers, Ohio State, Michigan State and Purdue are already out of the tournament, with Michigan as the lone B1G team to advance to the Sweet 16.

It is Alabama’s first appearance in the Sweet 16 since 2004, and Nate Oats’ first trip to this round as a coach.

Jahvon Quinerly was spectacular off the bench, scoring 14 points and dishing out 11 assists (not to mention grabbing 5 rebounds). He continues to develop into a star. John Petty Jr. snapped out of his slump, scoring 20 points, but Jaden Shackelford led the way with 21 points, knocking down 5 of his 8 3-pointers.

Aaron Wiggins played well in the loss for the Terrapins, scoring a game-high 27 points.

Now, the Tide advance to play UCLA on Sunday. We’ll see if the Tide can keep rolling on to the Elite 8.
