RC Slocum has battled cancer in recent years, but wanted to clear things up on Wednesday after there was some confusion about the former Texas A&M coach’s health.

“With the help of prayers from everywhere and the great people at MD Anderson,” he wrote on social media, “I have been cancer free for going on two years. Next check up 1/30/24.”

About 3 years ago, Slocum offered another health update as he met with a doctor and was hospitalized: “Please put me you on your prayer list. I am a firm believer that God is in control and can still do miraculous things. Thanks R.C.”

Slocum is the all-time winningest head football coach in Texas A&M history, and in 2012 was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He briefly came out of retirement in 2019 to serve as Texas A&M’s interim athletics director after Scott Woodward left for LSU.

Slocum finished his head coaching career at Texas A&M with an overall record of 123-47-2 in 14 years, according to his A&M bio. The 123 wins in his first 14 seasons ranked 8th all-time at the end of his career joining the likes of Barry Switzer (137), Tom Osborne (137), Steve Spurrier (132), Joe Paterno (131), LaVell Edwards (129), Amos Alonzo Stagg (128) and Bud Wilkinson (124).
