Reactions pour in after Bears yield 9 sacks in Justin Fields’ first career start

Justin Fields will have much better days than what he experienced during his first NFL start.

It probably can’t get much worse, either.

The Chicago Bears’ rookie quarterback, getting the call in place of an injured Andy Dalton, looked to make the most of his opportunity against the Cleveland Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday.

Instead, he was sacked 9 times during a 26-6 loss. Myles Garrett recorded 4.5 of those sacks, a franchise record.

Fields finished the day only 6-of-20 for 68 yards and 0 touchdowns, while his QBR was 41.3. It was an afternoon to forget for the former Georgia and Ohio State standout, and with not much of a timeline for Dalton’s return from a knee injury, he’ll be the option at quarterback for the time being.

But if there’s any good news, it’s that it’s not the highest sack total a quarterback has absorbed in his first start: that belongs to former Jets QB Greg McElroy, who was taken down 11 times by the then-San Diego Chargers in 2012.

Here’s the reaction to the performance by the Bears:
