Recapping the Week 12 SEC Coaches’ Media Teleconference through tweets
By Ethan Levine

Here’s a collection of noteworthy comments from Wednesday’s SEC Coaches’ Media Teleconference:
Nick Saban — Saban was asked about Alabama’s No. 5 ranking in Tuesday night’s updated College Football Playoff Top 25, and as one might have expected Saban couldn’t even fake an interest in the poll.
Saban on being No. 5 in CFP rankings: "I didn't even know what we were in the poll and it really doesn't matter."
— John Zenor (@jzenor) November 12, 2014
The coach also commented on Mississippi State’s veteran leadership heading into Saturday’s showdown in Tuscaloosa.
Saban calls MSU's seniors a "huge benefit." Calls it rare in today's game with juniors going to NFL.

Bret Bielema — Bielema used his time on the teleconference to discuss the potential snow showers that may overtake Fayetteville this weekend.
Bret Bielema said no players will be doing snow angels if there is snow in Fayetteville during the game. Well what's the point now???
— Edward Aschoff (@AschoffESPN) November 12, 2014
That wasn’t even the strangest thing Bielema said on the teleconference. He talked about what kinds of looks Arkansas might give LSU on offense this weekend, and let’s just say unorthodox doesn’t even begin to describe it.
Bielema: "We've run formations with eight or nine linemen on the field, and hopefully that will benefit us on Saturday."
— Barrett Sallee ?? (@BarrettSallee) November 12, 2014
Gus Malzahn — Auburn turns the page from a frustrating loss to Texas A&M to a huge showdown with Georgia this weekend. Malzahn spoke about his team’s recovery from the loss and the significance of Saturday’s game.
Auburn's Gus Malzahn on bouncing back: "We still have a whole lot to play for."
— Auburn Gold Mine (@AUGoldMine) November 12, 2014
Malzahn rivarly: "The rivalry is one of the better rivalry in college football, the oldest rivalry in the south … it's going to be a big 1."
— AUBlog (@AUBlog) November 12, 2014
As for the game itself, Malzahn discussed the return of Georgia tailback Todd Gurley and what Auburn must do to slow down the UGA offense.
Malzahn on defending UGA: "We're going to have to do a lot better against the run to make those play actions not so effective."
— AUBlog (@AUBlog) November 12, 2014
Will Muschamp — Florida was won two straight games since its last bye of the season, and although he remains on the hot seat Muschamp didn’t seem bothered by concerns over his job security.
"They're some really cool things that go with this job, too," Muschamp said. Said 'positives far outweigh the negatives.'
— Edgar Thompson (@osgators) November 12, 2014
As expected, Muschamp was asked about Leon Orr’s split from the program. The head coach had little to say on the matter.
Muschamp on Leon Orr: I've kind of moved on from the whole situation. I wish Leon well. This is a decision he made.
— Robbie Andreu (@RobbieAndreu) November 12, 2014
The Gators have scored 72 points in their last two games, and Muschamp credited the recent success on offense to coordinator Kurt Roper.
Muschamp says offense is doing better because OC Kurt Roper is understanding what his players can do more. Treon spark and lack of turnovers
— Edward Aschoff (@AschoffESPN) November 12, 2014
He also said Keanu Neal will be out for Saturday’s game.
Mark Richt — The Bulldogs’ head coach was asked about Todd Gurley’s return to the lineup this week, and he appeared forgiving of his star tailback.
Richt on Gurley: "He's a very good teammate who made a mistake. He cares about his teammates and cares about his friends."
— Barrett Sallee ?? (@BarrettSallee) November 12, 2014
Like Malzahn, Richt was asked about Auburn’s potent rushing attack in advance of Saturday’s Auburn-Georgia game. The Tigers lead the SEC in rushing offense, while Georgia ranks No. 2 in the conference.
Richt on Cameron Artis-Payne: "A great workhorse of a back; tough, got all the attributes you want in a great back…He's very outstanding."
— James Crepea (@JamesCrepea) November 12, 2014
Richt on whether DC Jeremy Pruitt helps since he faced AU last year as FSU's DC: "Well, we're going to see, aren't we?"
— WarEagleExtra (@wareagleextra) November 12, 2014
Mark Stoops — Kentucky has lost four straight games since beginning the year with a 5-1 record, and Stoops has clearly grown frustrated by the Wildcats’ recent struggles.
Stoops: “I’m tired of going back and forth” between offense and defense playing well. “We need to be a complete football team."
— Brett Dawson (@BDawsonWrites) November 12, 2014
Les Miles — LSU blew a late lead in an overtime loss to Alabama last week, and a number of calls (and no-calls) have been the subject of debate in the aftermath of the loss. Steve Shaw, head of SEC officials, said he spoke to Miles earlier this week.
#SEC coordinator of officials Steve Shaw says it's routine for him to speak with coaches. Shaw and Miles spoke Sunday. #LSU

Miles was also asked the potential for snow in Arkansas this weekend, but didn’t allow the weather to serve as an excuse for his team.
"If you have the want to play in the next league, you better be ready to play [in cold weather]" – Les Miles using "want" :)
— Edward Aschoff (@AschoffESPN) November 12, 2014
Gary Pinkel — Pinkel will lead Missouri into Texas A&M’s Kyle Field for the fifth time in six years (Mizzou is 3-1 in its last four games in College Station dating back to its days in the Big 12), and the Tigers’ head coach talked about playing in those kinds of venues.
Pinkel: "I tell our players, 'Playing in this league you get a chance to be at the some of the best venues ever. You've got to embrace it.'"
— Dave Matter (@Dave_Matter) November 12, 2014
He also talked about his team’s ability to overcome adversity as it aims to win its second straight SEC East title the same year it lost at home to Indiana.
Pinkel on his team's resiliency: "You're going to have adversity. I tell our players, when it happens, we'll have a plan to get through it."
— Evie Van Pelt (@OleMissEvie) November 12, 2014
Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel on QB Maty Mauk: "Generally when things get the toughest, he's at his best."
— Sam Khan Jr. (@skhanjr) November 12, 2014
Hugh Freeze — The Rebels’ head coach discussed the benefits of having a bye week at this juncture of the season during his opening remarks on Wednesday’s teleconference.
Freeze: Our open date came at a really good time for us. It's good to have some time, hopefully, to get players healthy.
— Evie Van Pelt (@OleMissEvie) November 12, 2014
The Rebels were without left tackle Laremy Tunsil and safety Trae Elston, among others, during its win over Presbyterian last weekend. And then, just like that, his time on the teleconference came to an end.
No questions for Coach Freeze….so it seems his media is enjoying the open date, too. :-)
— Evie Van Pelt (@OleMissEvie) November 12, 2014
Dan Mullen — Despite entering Saturday’s showdown as the undefeated, No. 1 team in the nation, Mullen’s Mississippi State Bulldogs are heavy underdogs against Alabama.
Mullen: This week we go back to being the underdog.
— Alex Scarborough (@ByScarborough) November 12, 2014
Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen says he's not surprised Alabama is favored (by 8-1/2 points) since Tide has homefield advantage.
— John Zenor (@jzenor) November 12, 2014
Mullen says his players love this week. This is what they came to school for.
— Ben Wait (@bcwait) November 12, 2014
Steve Spurrier — The Head Ball Coach returns to his old stomping grounds in the Swamp for this weekend’s showdown with Florida. The Gamecocks only travel to Gainesville once every other year, and there’s no guarantee Spurrier will ever be back.
Spurrier non-committal about whether this could be his last game coaching in The Swamp.
— Robbie Andreu (@RobbieAndreu) November 12, 2014
As for the game itself, Spurrier, an offensive mind in his own right, gave this assessment of the resurgent Florida offense.
Spurrier on #Gators over last 2: "Their O is solid, as solid as can be w/ QB they have. Harris is a good one. He's played on winning teams."
— OnlyGators.com: Florida Gators news (@onlygators) November 12, 2014
Butch Jones — Jones and the Vols enjoyed a bye last weekend, but the head coach was asked about his team’s come-from-behind win over South Carolina two weeks ago in Columbia.
JONES: We aways say don’t look at the scoreboard, just keep playing. That was never more evident than the SC game. We have been resilient
— Tennessee Football (@Vol_Football) November 12, 2014
JONES: How do you use that victory (SC) to propel you to your next opponent and how do you use that to prepare for Kentucky.
— Tennessee Football (@Vol_Football) November 12, 2014
Kevin Sumlin — Texas A&M posted its best win of the season with a 41-38 victory over Auburn last week, and Sumlin commented on the progression of new freshman starting quarterback Kyle Allen on Wednesday’s teleconference.
Sumlin says operational aspects of playing quarterback are sometimes difficult for young QBs, but Kyle Allen has handled it well.
— Barrett Sallee ?? (@BarrettSallee) November 12, 2014
The Aggies will shake things up along their offensive line this week, and this could impact the outcome as A&M prepares for a tough Missouri defensive line. Mizzou is third in the SEC with 29 sacks this season, and star defensive end Shane Ray leads the SEC with 12.
Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said Jarvis Harrison is "more comfortable" at LT than Cedric Ogbuehi, who's at RT w/Germain Ifedi out.
— Sam Khan Jr. (@skhanjr) November 12, 2014
Sumlin says Mizzou pass rush is more than Shane Ray: "They get a good push inside. They’ve got athletes across the board."
— Dave Matter (@Dave_Matter) November 12, 2014
Derek Mason — The Vandy head coach was asked about how he’ll approach the end of the season having now officially been eliminated from bowl eligibility.
Derek Mason talked about how important it is to finish the season with some momentum for the offseason. He has to make recruiting splashes
