Rece Davis is aware of one of the more talked-about issues in the SEC: The status, and future, of John Calipari at Kentucky.
Davis said his belief is that Calipari stays at Kentucky, in part because a strong recruiting class is on tap and he thinks “anyone would be foolish to go otherwise.”
“There are 2 people on the planet built for that job, and their names are John Calipari and Rick Pitino,” Davis said on the ESPN College GameDay podcast with Pete Thamel. “… They’re built for that job. I think he has a really good recruiting class coming in, I think he’s adaptable and I think he’ll make changes. I think he should choose to stay and I don’t think Kentucky should entertain the notion of making a change, though I know the fan base is mad. But they’re always mad if they don’t hang a banner, that’s the way it goes.”
However, David admitted that for everything Kentucky’s done under Calipari, the Cats need another championship to, “put a validating stamp on it.”
The problem is Kentucky doesn’t have the number of elite players it’s had in the past, Davis said.
Davis recalled being at Kentucky for the Kansas game, and said the vibe was that the fan base wanted to cheer for the Cats, but the moment something went wrong, the crowd went to chant “vile, vulgar things” toward Kansas players.
“There was some angst and disgust as I was making my way out of Rupp Arena,” he said.
