ESPN’s College GameDay went to College Station for last week’s College Football Playoff matchup between Miami and Texas A&M. It was the biggest game the Aggies have possibly ever hosted. Naturally, ESPN wanted to reflect as much with its guest picker, choosing Johnny Manziel for the role. But Manziel, after attending the Anthony Joshua-Jake Paul fight in Miami the night before, did not make the trip, forcing ESPN to pivot to Alex Caruso.

The day following the game, Manziel stated on Instagram that the reason he missed the game was “out of his control.” Beyond his statement, there are rumors that he picked up a sudden illness and didn’t appear because of it. No matter the reason for Manziel’s no-show, Rece Davis wasn’t thrilled about being stood up.

“When you go to a fight like that, you’ve got to be very careful about where you eat breakfast the next morning,” Davis said on this week’s episode of the College GameDay podcast. “Because it can leave you ill and give you difficulty in reaching the locales where you are scheduled to be.”

Davis all but confirmed a swipe at Manziel moments later, saying “for those who follow closely, you’ll be able to read between the lines there.”

The Hurricanes defeated the Aggies 10-3 in the CFP first round contest, picking up their first-ever CFP victory. Miami now faces Ohio State in the CFP Quarterfinals on New Year’s Eve at 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN).
