Auburn football is back.

The Tigers kicked off fall camp Monday, and one notable roster change was evident.

Former wide receiver Jason Smith is now playing defensive back and wearing No. 25. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn confirmed the news during his Monday press conference.

“Jason Smith has moved to safety,” Malzahn said. “That’s a move that he really been wanting to do, even during the summer and it gives us depth at the safety position. He’s a guy that will understand offenses and I really think he can come in there and do a solid job and help us in that area.”

During his short time at Auburn, Smith was moved from quarterback to wide receiver to, now, defensive back. Because of the athlete that he is, the coaches are trying to find a way to get Smith on the field and utilize his talent.

In 23 games for Auburn over the last two years, Smith caught 17 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns, with both scores coming in 2015.

Smith’s move to defensive back hopes to mirror that of former Tiger Trovon Reed. Reed moved from receiver to defensive back prior to his senior season, and he’s still with the San Diego Chargers because of it.
