Here’s how the Vanderbilt Commodores graded after their 34-10 loss to Florida.

OFFENSE: D

Johnny McCrary made several key mistakes. The redshirt freshman threw two interceptions and went 14-of-35 passing, throwing a 40 percent completion percentage. Ralph Webb was able to gain 83 yards on 16 carries, setting a new Vanderbilt freshman rushing record, despite two crucial fumbles. The Gainesville Fla., native passed the late Kwane Doster’s previous best of 798 yards and now has 843 with two games remaining.

DEFENSE: D

Vanderbilt’s defense looked strong early. However, the offense was incapable of providing much of a threat against the Gators and couldn’t keep their teammates off the field. Florida went on to scored 24 unanswered points after its first score before the Commodores’ fourth quarter field goal.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B+

Darrius Sims recorded 151 kick return yards and seven punt return yards. Kicker Tommy Openshaw connected on a 48-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. Punter Colby Cooke averaged 41.5 yards per attempt and totaled 249 yards on six attempts, including two pinned inside the 20-yard line.

COACHING: D

Vanderbilt’s playcalling was forgettable and did little to pose as a threat to Florida’s lead. The offense was incapable of keeping its defensive teammates off the field and the defense suffered. The Gators dominated on both sides of the football and looked like the all-around stronger program.

OVERALL: D

Vanderbilt is now unable to gain bowl eligibility. Despite a negative record, the Commodores have made considerable improvements since Week 1, which may go unnoticed by many. Derek Mason has several pieces to build for his program’s future and should make the necessary changes to improve. However, Vanderbilt still has a long road to travel in hopes of rebuilding.
