In his first three seasons, Bonamego led Central Michigan to a bowl game in each year, but the bottom fell out in 2018, as the Chippewas finished 1-11. After this dismal season, Bonamego ends his tenure at Central Michigan with a mark of 22-29, including 15-17 in the MAC.
That overall record includes three bowl losses. Bonamego was unable to capture a postseason victory at Central Michigan.
The 1-11 record is the worst in program history. Central Michigan’s only victory this year came against Maine in September.
On Friday night, the Central Michigan athletic department released a statement following the announcement of Bonamego’s firing.
“Making a leadership change is a difficult decision, especially when you know that coach has given his all to CMU,” CMU athletic director Michael Alford said in a written statement according to WXYZ.com. “After conducting a 360-degree evaluation of the program, it was clear that a change is needed if we are going to compete for and win championships. We greatly appreciate all that John has done for his alma mater and wish him the best moving forward.”
Central Michigan also announced defensive backs coach Cory Hall will lead the program until the athletic department finds a head coaching replacement.
