“The Swami” may be returning to ESPN in an expanded role this fall.
According to a report by The New York Post, ESPN is in talks with Chris Berman about returning in a larger role for the upcoming NFL season. It wouldn’t be a full-time position for Berman, who has been in semi-retirement since 2017.
Berman would contribute to “SportsCenter,” and potentially even host some editions on Sunday nights. ESPN is hoping Berman could work a quarter of the NFL season. It would want more, but Berman has already made plans for some weekends.
Berman also would do features and interviews to aid “Sunday NFL Countdown,” which dropped significantly in ratings after his exit from the program.
Former ESPN president John Skipper was in charge when Berman’s role was reduced. James Pitaro has since taken over as the network’s president.
Berman was already scheduled to host “NFL Primetime” after the NFL conference championship games and the Super Bowl this season.
Shortly after Berman entered semi-retirement, his wife, Katherine, died in a car accident in May 2017.
