New Miami head coach Manny Diaz appears to have found his play-caller.
Canes Insight is reporting that Major Applewhite will be the new Hurricanes offensive coordinator. The former Texas quarterback (1997-2001) was Nick Saban’s first offensive coordinator at Alabama in the 2007 season before being replaced by Jim McElwain for 2008. Applewhite was an assistant at Texas from 2008-2013 during the final seasons of Mack Brown’s tenure. He was most recently an offensive coordinator at Houston (2015-16) under Tom Herman. He replaced Herman as Houston’s head coach after the 2016 season, but was recently fired after a blowout bowl loss (70-14 to Army) to end the 2018 campaign.
In 2018, Applewhite’s Cougars ranked No. 7 nationally in total offense, gaining 512.5 yards per game. Houston was also No. 5 in scoring offense, averaging 43.9 points per game.
UM will travel to Orlando to open the 2019 season for a neutral-site meeting against Florida on Aug. 31.
