It was only a matter of time before Florida head coach Jim McElwain began filling out his staff and according to Sports Illustrated, the new Gators’ head coach has found the second big puzzle piece to his coaching staff.

Thayer Evans is reporting that the Gators will hire Michigan offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier to the same position.

Like McElwain, Nussmeier was previously an offensive coordinator at Alabama before moving on to Michigan for the 2014 season.

While the Wolverines did struggle during Nussmeier’s time there, his success at Alabama will take precedent at Florida.

Nussmeier helped lead the Crimson Tide to a 13-1 record as well as a SEC Championship and BCS Championship in 2012. Under his guidance, quarterback AJ McCarron threw for a school-record 30 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

This won’t be the first time Nussmeier and McElwain are on the same staff together. The two were coaching alongside one another at Michigan State from 2003-05.

The offensive side of the ball is easily the most important aspect for McElwain early on in his new job. With the Gators’ offensive woes over the course of the past few seasons, Florida fans are running out of patience in regard to success on offense. McElwain’s offensive history and success combined with the SEC experience of Nussmeier should be a strong combination for the Gators in 2015.

Yesterday when making media rounds, McElwain said that his staff would begin to shape as bowl games and NFL seasons concluded.

Nussmeier marks McElwain’s second hire since becoming head coach at Florida. Last week, he hired former Mississippi State defensive coordinator Geoff Collins to the same position as well.
