Report: Houston-Memphis game postponed due to COVID-19 outbreak; Cougars working to add game vs. Big 12 squad

A COVID-19 outbreak at Memphis caused next week’s game with Houston to be postponed, but the Cougars may not be off the field after all.

Last week, Memphis announced that the football program had halted all team activities because several positive tests and contact tracing put a “significant” number of players and staff into quarantine, 247Sports reported. In their press release, the Tigers stated that the cases had been traced back to social gatherings outside of football.

But Bruce Feldman reported that Baylor has stepped in to possibly fill a game with Houston next week.

Memphis opened its season with a win against the Arkansas State Red Wolves on Sept. 5, 37-24.

For Houston, the game against Memphis was supposed to be the season-opener.

This has been a theme throughout the American Athletic Conference. These two teams now make up part of a majority of AAC programs that have had a game postponed this fall. East Carolina, SMU, Tulsa, and UCF have also been hit with delays due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Houston and Memphis have mutually agreed to postpone Sept. 18 game to a later date. AAC will work with both schools to reschedule.
