Now that Georgia has its man in Kirby Smart, the new coach wants his man.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday night that the Bulldogs will name Smart their coach as early as Sunday after most recently serving as Alabama’s defensive coordinator since 2009 under Nick Saban.

Smart apparently has wasted no time expressing his desire for who he wants as his leader on his favorite side of the ball, and that’s Auburn current defensive coordinator, Will Muschamp, according to Football Scoop.

However, Muschamp is reportedly a candidate for the South Carolina head coaching job, according to FoxSports.com’s Bruce Feldman.

That seems to put Muschamp at a crossroads in his coaching career: try his hand at another head coaching position in the SEC or continue as a defensive coordinator under Smart, someone who’s served as a defensive coordinator himself for the last seven seasons and has no head coaching experience.

It’s easy to see why Smart would show a desire so quickly for Muschamp in that role. Although Auburn was ranked 90th in the FBS in total defense this season, Muschamp still has a strong track record in that regard.

Muschamp’s defenses at Florida all ranked among the top 10 in total defense with the exception of 2014 (15th). Muschamp was also a part of stout defenses at Auburn (2006-07) and LSU (2001-04) as well as the Miami Dolphins at the pro level (2005).
