LSU senior linebacker Corey Thompson suffered a leg injury Wednesday and could miss considerable time, according to a report by NOLA.com through a source in the program.

Early indications suggest that Thompson may have a broken fibula, which could require surgery and would take an estimated 6-8 weeks for recovery time.

The senior was moved to linebacker in the spring to add depth to the position group. Thompson played safety during his first three seasons at LSU, made eight starts in 32 appearances and recorded 66 tackles, 0.5 for loss and three pass break ups.

His role at linebacker was undetermined, however, Thompson was expected to serve as LSU’s backup middle linebacker, which remains thin on the depth chart.

LSU’s front seven had already seen injuries to both defensive tackle Christian LaCouture and jack linebacker Isaiah Washington on Monday.

Thompson was redshirted in 2014 due to a knee injury, so he would need to be approved by the NCAA to gain an extra year of eligibility.
