Mississippi State’s coaching staff could be completed soon, according to Football Scoop.

The only spot yet to be filled is Dan Mullen’s defensive assistant position, and the Bulldogs have made an offer to Alcorn State head coach Jay Hopson to fill it, according to the report.

Hopson has spent the last four seasons as the coach of the Braves. After going 4-7 in his first season in 2012, Alcorn State has won at least nine games in the three seasons since, going 10-3 while defeating Southern to win the school’s first SWAC championship in 20 years in 2014.

However, Hopson also has some experience coaching in the SEC. He spent a season at Ole Miss under coach David Cutcliffe as the defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator in 2004. He also had a couple seasons at LSU (1994) and Florida (1995) as a graduate assistant.

Hopson is a Mississippi native of Vicksburg, Miss., and is a Rebels alum.

After Football Scoop’s report was made public, Mullen spoke to The Clarion-Ledger and denied it, saying he hadn’t offered Hopson a contract. Here’s what he told Michael Bonner:
