Auburn is pursuing former Florida head coach Will Muschamp to be its next defensive coordinator, though the canned Florida coach is mulling other opportunities, AL.com reports, citing a source with knowledge of the process.
Muschamp and Auburn have shown mutual interest, however, a decision is not expected within the next few days, AL.com’s Brandon Marcello reports.
Muschamp is thought to be head coach Gus Malzahn’s top option to replace the recently departed Ellis Johnson.
Texas A&M, among others, are interested in Muschamp’s services. It is believed possible NFL opportunities are in play for the respected defensive coach.
Muschamp built his reputation as a defensive coordinator during stints at Auburn and Texas. His Tigers defenses ranked first in scoring defense in 2007, and ranked sixth nationally in 2006.
Should Muschamp stay on the collegiate level, he likely will become the first $2 million coordinator, topping Alabama’s Kirby Smart and LSU’s John Chavis.
