Miami is reportedly losing a high-profile legacy.
According to reports, Michael Irvin II, son of Hurricane great and Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, is transferring from UM. CaneSport reported that the younger Irvin, who was absent from Miami’s first two spring practices, has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. Neither party has released an official statement on the report.
Irvin II is entering the final year of his eligibility. He signed with Miami in 2016 and most recently completed his fourth season with the program. Irvin missed the 2018 season due to injury and redshirted. Playing three seasons – 2016, ’17 and ’19 – Irvin played in 31 games at tight end, including six starts, logging 11 catches for 111 yards. Irvin started three games for the Hurricanes in 2019.
If Irvin II does go through with finishing his career elsewhere, it could make for an awkward weekend in Coral Gables next month as his father was invited to speak at UM’s alumni weekend on April 3.
Coming out of South Florida high school powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas, Irvin II was a 3-star recruit on the 247Sports Composite with offers from Georgia and Michigan. Irvin II committed to Miami in 2015 before Al Golden was fired. Todd Hartley, now on staff as tight ends coach at Georgia, was the Mark Richt assistant responsible for seeing that Irvin II remained committed and signed with UM.
