SEC basketball fans are in attendance at Bridgestone Arena for the conference’s men’s basketball tournament. That appears unlikely to be the case starting Thursday.
Nathan King of Auburn Rivals is reporting, per a source, that SEC teams’ spirit squads (cheerleaders, band) have been informed they will no longer be allowed to attend the remainder of the tournament, beginning with Thursday’s Round 2. King’s report that an announcement restricting fan attendance is expected soon.
The development comes on a day the sports world has been rocked over precautionary measures being taken to limit the spread of coronavirus. NCAA President Mark Emmert announced that all March Madness will be held without fans in the stands with attendance restricted to only essential staff and limited family. The NCAA is looking at moving the Final Four and regional games to smaller venues. TV coverage will go on as planned. Numerous other conference tournaments are being held with no fan attendance. The Ivy League has officially canceled all remaining practices and games for spring sports.
Spirit groups (cheerleaders, band, etc.) for #SECTourney teams have been told they will be not be allowed to attend the remainder of the tournament starting tomorrow, source tells @AuburnRivals. Announcement restricting admission for all fans expected soon.
