Will Muschamp has already made multiple changes to his South Carolina coaching staff this offseason, but he could be dealing with another vacancy.
FootballScoop reports that Gamecocks defensive line coach John Scott Jr. “is a strong candidate for the same role at Penn State.”
Scott, a native of Greer, South Carolina, joined Muschamp’s staff in 2019. The Western Carolina alumnus’ previous stops include Texas Tech, the New York Jets and Arkansas Razorbacks.
James Franklin is looking for a new defensive line coach after Sean Spencer’s recent departure. Scott has familiarity with long-time Franklin assistant Brent Pry, the Nittany Lions’ current defensive coordinator. Scott was a graduate assistant under Pry at Louisiana-Lafayette from 2002-03. The two also worked together at Georgia Southern during the 2010 season. In 2011, Pry departed to join Franklin’s staff at Vanderbilt while Scott remained at Georgia Southern through 2012.
FootballScoop’s report says Franklin is expected to make a hire soon, so the Gamecocks should know Scott’s status before too long.
