Tennessee opened spring practice Tuesday without a familiar face on the field at linebacker. Apparently, there’s an explanation for the absence of junior Gavin Bryant.
According to a report by WNML’s Jimmy Hyams, Tennessee’s depth at linebacker is likely to take a hit, as Bryant is currently exploring his transfer options.

Bryant appeared in 21 games over the last two seasons, making only six total tackles during that time. The Jackson, Ala., native was a four-star signee in Tennessee’s 2014 recruiting class and played almost exclusively on the Vols’ special teams units the previous two seasons.
With the emergence of sophomore Daniel Bituli, early enrollee Shanon Reid and Colton Jumper recently gaining an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA, the opportunity for meaningful playing time with Tennessee may have passed for Bryant. With Darrin Kirkland Jr. and Cortez McDowell set to likely lock down two starting roles in Bob Shoops’ defense next season, Bryant may not have wished to compete with the other linebackers for playing time on Rocky Top.
