UPDATE: Joe Doyle has officially announced he is in the NCAA transfer portal.
One of Tennessee’s special teams players appears to be headed to the transfer portal. According to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, Volunteers punter Joe Doyle has submitted his name and appears prepared to seek playing opportunities elsewhere.
In 2018, Doyle, as a redshirt freshman, punted 65 times for an average of 41.1 yards per punt en route to being named to the USA Today Freshman All-America team. Prior to the 2019 season, he was named to the Ray Guy Award watch list, and despite splitting duties with sophomore classmate Paxton Brooks—with Brooks registering 29 punts to Doyle’s 22—he was named a Ray Guy Award finalist.
A Knoxville native, Doyle was a punter for Farragut High School, where he gathered all-state honors in 2017. He was named to both the Army All-American and Under Armour All-American games, the only punter in the country with that designation. Coming out of high school, Doyle was considered by 247Sports to be the No. 8 punter in the class of 2017.
