Joey Jones is making a return to Starkville.

No, Jones never played or coached for the Bulldogs, but he did lead South Alabama to a 21-20 victory over Mississippi State in the 2016 season opener. Now he’s set to become the next special teams coordinator following the departure of Scott Fountain back to Georgia. In his return to Davis-Wade Stadium, Jones will have a chance to make that up to MSU fans.

Steve Robertson of 247Sports was the first to report that Jones has been hired by Joe Moorhead. Roberston’s information has since been confirmed by Will Sammon of the Clarion-Ledger.

Jones served as South Alabama head coach from 2008 until last season. He also has head coaching experience at Birmingham-Southern, as well as high school head coaching experience at Mountain Brook (Ala.) High and Dora (Ala.) High. The Mobile native played his college football in Tuscaloosa.

UPDATE: Mississippi State has confirmed the news of Jones’ hiring.
