The Rose Bowl wants to maintain its traditional date and time, even though it would keep the game out of the College Football Playoff semifinal rotation.
Rose Bowl management committee chair Laura Farber spoke to members of the press at Big Ten Media Days on Tuesday. She shared that the game has requested to maintain its kickoff time and date of 5 p.m. ET on New Year’s Day. With the expanded Playoff field, this would keep the Rose Bowl from hosting a semifinal contest, and only hold quarterfinal games.

The Rose Bowl has proposed to CFP that it keep its time & date – 5 pm ET, Jan. 1 – in future playoffs. Could mean it being a permanent quarterfinal game.
“We’re optimistic,” she told @YahooSports

The Rose Bowl’s request would need the other New Year’s Six games that are in the CFP rotation to sign on, sources indicated to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. Considering the semifinal games are of greater significance than the quarterfinal games, this seemingly shouldn’t be an issue.
CFP commissioners are considering the Rose Bowl’s request, sources tell @YahooSports. Long form agreements for the CFP’s six bowl games are expected to be complete in the coming weeks.
If the Rose’s request is granted, other CFP bowl games must agree to take the other semifinals

Rose Bowl date years away from conflict
While the CFP is working to get everything planned out for the next few years, the Rose Bowl date won’t be an issue for the next two postseasons.
The next two college football postseasons are already set, with the Rose Bowl hosting New Year’s Day Playoff games. The 2026-27 postseason, however, has yet to be scheduled.
