Ryan Day says postgame fight between Ohio State, Michigan was about pride
Ryan Day said the postgame fight between Ohio State and Michigan that resulted in several players being pepper sprayed, multiple players being tackled to the ground, and police intervention was a result of pride.
Michigan won 13-10 in Buckeye Stadium, upsetting the second-ranked Buckeyes for its fourth straight win in the rivalry series. After the game went final, Michigan players tried to plant a flag at midfield.
Ohio State players intervened and a massive brawl broke out. ESPN’s Jake Trotter reported that some were left bloodied after the incident.
Day was asked about the fight in his postgame press conference after the game.
“I don’t know all the details, but I know that these guys were looking to put a flag on our field and our guys are not going to let that happen,” Day said. “I’ll find out exactly what happened. But this is our field and certainly we’re embarrassed in the fact we lost this game, but there are some prideful guys on this team that weren’t just going to let that happen.”
Day also appeared to be rather disengaged on the field while the fight was raging.
Also, Ryan Day, your whole team is in the midst of a brawl, and you’re on the sideline asking “what happened?” Huh!?
Get your butt on the field and command your players go to the locker room.

Of course, one way to prevent an opposing team from planting a flag on your home field is to win the football game. Ohio State closed as a 20.5-point favorite over a Michigan team that entered with a 6-5 record.
Michigan quarterback Davis Warren sent that exact message after the game.
“We’re going to win in your house and we’re gonna plant the flag,” Warren said. “You should have done something about it.”
