The Alabama Crimson Tide are experiencing a bona fide quarterback battle in spring camp, with Keelon Russell and Austin Mack engaged in a day-to-day tussle for the QB1 spot to replace Ty Simpson.
Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb met with the media after Thursday’s practice to discuss the physical traits of both Russell and Mack – and how the Crimson Tide might be able to capitalize on them during the 2026 season.
“Obviously, Keelon is a really, really good athlete,” Grubb told reporters. “I think his feet probably come into play. I think you saw it in the Rose Bowl, obviously Austin can run a little bit. He had a scramble touchdown during the season as well. It’s not like Austin can’t run, but there is a piece of athleticism there with Keelon that’s different from some guys.
“As far as arm talent, they’re both supremely talented as far as pushing the ball all over the field. There’s not going to be a throw I have in the game plan that I have for one but couldn’t do with the other. Both have quick releases. Accuracy is something they’re both working on. But very similar guys. I don’t think other than Keelon’s feet, there’s a massive difference, other than size.”
Russell saw only spot action as a freshman in 2025, completing 11-of-15 pass attempts for 143 yards and two touchdowns in two games. As a sophomore, Mack played in four games for Alabama – going 24-of-32 for 228 yards and two touchdowns.
Mack took Simpson’s place in the second half of the Rose Bowl against eventual national champion Indiana after Simpson sustained a rib injury and could not continue.
