Ryan Grubb met with reporters on Wednesday after the Crimson Tide held their 2nd practice of the spring on Wednesday.

The new Alabama offensive coordinator spoke briefly about each of the quarterbacks who are in the mix to be starting quarterback in 2025: Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell.

“Ty has done a good job, I thought he had the biggest jump from Day 1 to Day 2 just as far as being able to take in all the information, process quickly and move,” Grubb said of the veteran.

Mack is a former Washington transfer who was a true freshman with the Huskies when Grubb and Kalen DeBoer took that program all the way to the national title game. Grubb had plenty of praise for how Mack has handled the early part of spring ball.

“Austin has done a really good job of showing command for a young player,” Grubb said.

Russell is perhaps the most exciting member of the Crimson Tide QB room, at least longterm. While just a true freshman, he signed with Alabama as a 5-star prospect and could be an early contributor for the Crimson Tide. Grubb said he’s been impressed with Russell so far in spring practice.

“Keelon is awesome, man,” Grubb said. “He’s very unflappable. And even when things don’t go right, and they very rarely will for a freshman quarterback, I think he’s done an awesome job of just staying the course and being very steady. And he can make a lot of plays.”

It will be interesting to see how this competition develops throughout the rest of spring ball and into the summer. A-Day is set for April 12.
