Ryan McGee has taken stock of the maturation of Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe throughout the season.
Milroe was benched after Alabama lost to Texas in Week 2. Upon returning to the starting lineup, Milroe has tossed 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 5 straight wins.
During an appearance on the College GameDay podcast, the ESPN analyst believes the turning point of the season for Alabama has been the strides made by Milroe.
“Going back to the Ole Miss game, I feel like the window was cracked open if they were finally going to pounce on Alabama and they let them get things rebuilt,” McGee said. “Jalen Milroe now vs. the guy I saw a month ago, it’s a completely different football player.”
The enhanced self-confidence from Milroe has been noticeable. Milroe is starting to conduct himself even better in media sessions.
“Marty Smith sat down with Jalen I think it was Wednesday of last week. Marty immediately called me when the interview was over with. He goes ‘That’s a different guy.'” McGee said. “That’s a completely different guy than the guy we had chatted with in Week 2 leading into the Texas game.”
McGee thinks Milroe learned a great deal from the hard lesson and is now grateful for the second opportunity.
“He gets benched. He gets reminded we don’t need you. We can figure something else out,” McGee said. “Then he goes to work and fixes it, which is why they did what they did to him.”
Milroe and Alabama will emerge from the bye week with a meaningful contest vs. visiting LSU on Nov. 4. Alabama seals the SEC West with a win vs. LSU and 1 Ole Miss loss in the next 2 games.
