Sam Pittman opens up on decision to fire Dan Enos, OC plan going forward

Sam Pittman felt the need to make a change on a 6-game losing streak. The Arkansas head coach relieved offensive coordinator Dan Enos of his duties on Sunday, a day after the Razorbacks lost 7-3 to Mississippi State.

Pittman maintains that he still thinks highly of Enos, who he previously worked with at Arkansas under Bret Bielema, but things weren’t working out.

“Dan’s a really good football coach, we just didn’t click in the system, Pittman told reporters.

Veteran starter KJ Jefferson was expected to be one of the SEC’s top quarterbacks in 2023. Jefferson was struggling in the Enos offense.

“We have to take some of the things off of KJ’s plate… he’s not playing fast and he’s not as accurate throwing the football as he’s been in the past,” Pittman said.

With Enos out, Pittman is turning to Kenny Guiton as the new play-caller and quarterbacks coach. Pittman said the OC opening is already generating interest. Guiton, who had been coaching wide receivers, can consider the rest of the season an audition.

“Since yesterday, I’ve gotten a bunch of calls (about the OC job), I don’t have time for that right now,” Pittman said. “Obviously, if Kenny does well, that’d put him in the conversation for the job next season.”

Arkansas is off in Week 9. The Razorbacks are back in action in Week 10 against Florida in Gainesville.
