Before his remarkable return to the football field nearly 3 years after an awful knee injury threatened to end his career, Florida State quarterback McKenzie Milton was a star for Scott Frost at UCF. The Hawaii native had an electrifying sophomore with the Knights, throwing for 4,037 yards and 37 touchdowns versus just 9 interceptions while recording 613 yards on 100 carries and 8 touchdowns on the ground as the Knights went undefeated.
His junior season saw him total 2,663 yards passing and 25 touchdowns to go along with 9 rushing scores, a campaign cut short in the final game of the regular season against USF on Nov. 23, 2018.
On Sunday, Milton entered in place of Jordan Travis and engineered a stirring comeback for the Seminoles before they eventually fell to Notre Dame in overtime. While Frost and Milton have gone their separate ways—Frost to Nebraska and Milton to Tallahassee—Milton owes plenty to his former head coach.
“He’s family to me,” Frost said, according to The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman. “He went through something hard. I’m glad to see him having success. He deserves it.”
Milton’s story captured the attention of the college football world, and his perseverance over the last several years despite some personal setbacks is certainly something to be admired.
