Scottie Scheffler arrested outside golf course before second round of PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler was arrested early Friday morning as he made his way to Valhalla Golf Club for the 2nd round of the PGA Championship.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, who was on scene at the time of the incident, Scheffler was detained following a “misunderstanding” of traffic flow with Louisville police officers. Per reports, traffic in the area was backed up after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a shuttle bus on Friday morning.

Scheffler was charged with 2nd degree assault of a police officer, 3rd degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Scheffler issued this statement on the matter to Darlington:
“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.
“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”
Scheffler is the world’s No. 1 golfer and is fresh off a win at The Masters earlier this spring. He enters this weekend with 2 major championships on his résumé.
Scheffler shot a 4-under 67 on Thursday during the first round of this tournament. He enters Friday as one of the favorites to win the event, despite this incident with Louisville police. According to the latest lines from DraftKings, Scheffler is +450 to win the tournament and -115 to finish in the top-5. Xander Schauffele, who shot 9-under on Thursday, the favorite to win the tournament at +240.
