We knew five-star recruit Nick Chubb had a chance to be a star player at Georgia down the line, but as a true freshman playing behind Heisman candidate Todd Gurley?

Hardly.

Chubb was the runaway winner of our 2014 SDS SEC freshman of the year award this week, receiving six first-place votes from eight of our editorial staff members. He rushed for the second-most yards (1,281) in the league despite not assuming the starting role until midway through the season.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette and Tennessee pass rusher Derek Barnett also received votes.

Chubb assumed first-team duties in Athens after Gurley was suspended four games for an autograph investigation in October. Over that stretch, the Cedartown, Ga. native rushed for 671 yards and tallied six total touchdowns.

Upon Gurley’s return against Auburn, Chubb remained effective as the Bulldogs’ featured back, picking up 144 yards and two scores against the Tigers.

Heading into the Belk Bowl, Chubb’s riding a seven-game streak of at least 113 yards on the ground. It’s no surprise he has already received Heisman buzz for 2015.
