Sean McVay is well aware that his offensive coordinator could be headed back to Kentucky after he held the same position with the Wildcats in 2021.
Earlier on Friday, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that Coen is headed back to Lexington after he’s been the Los Angeles Rams’ offensive coordinator this season.
Later in the day, McVay, the Rams’ coach, was asked about the report that Coen is going back to Kentucky, where he worked before rejoining the Rams.
“We’ve talked about that being a possibility,” McVay said, via Pro Football Talk. “I don’t think anything’s official yet. But if that’s the direction that he goes, then he’ll do a great job just like he did previously. He and I have a great relationship no matter how it ends up finishing up. He’s going to do a great job with us the rest of this year. Then if that’s the direction that he chooses, then I know he’ll do an outstanding job there.”
Mark Stoops hired Coen off the Rams’ staff to be UK’s offensive coordinator for the 2021 season. Coen then returned to the Rams after last season.
Stoops has made a habit of hiring NFL assistants, as he did to replace Coen after last season with Rich Scangarello, but Scangarello was recently fired to create this opening.
Coen was an assistant for the Rams from 2018 to 2020 before he went to Kentucky as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2021. He then returned to the Rams this year after Kevin O’Connell left to become the Vikings head coach.
